Info on old Goa:
From the sixteenth to eighteenth century, Old Goa (Ela) served as the colonial capital of Portuguese-India and was one of the richest cities anywhere in Asia, with a population exceeding that of both Lisbon and London. While repeated cholera and malaria outbreaks eventually forced the capital to be moved to Panaji in 1843, the old, atmospheric churches, cathedrals and convents of Old Goa remain largely intact.
All the sites of Old Goa can be reached by foot, but give yourself at least a half-day to soak up the history and the atmosphere. Old Goa highlights include the Basilica of Bom Jesus, where the remains of Francis Xaviar, patron saint of Goa, are kept. Another must-see attraction is St. Catherine’s Cathedral (Sé Cathedral), the largest church of those in Old Goa.

Markets: Mapusa Fridays
One of the few remaining authentic bazaars left in Goa. Women from the neighboring villages convene here early every Friday morning to fight for space, squatting under beaten hand-held umbrella to sell their wares. Everything and anything is sold here for dried fish, spices, jack fruit, plantain bananas to homemade pickles and preserves, spices, earthen pots, coir mats, and the famous home-cured Goan sausage, the local chorizo. If you are lucky you may also find some antique curios. The market shuts down shortly after sunset, so get there early!
Markets: Arpora Saturday Night
This sprawling market is located in Arpora and transpires every Saturday evening from 6pm until late night. Here, one may find everything from archetypical Indian stalls selling spices, teas, Kashmiri carpets and silver jewellery to international designers who convene from all over the word to sell their unique creations, many of which may be found only here. This market also houses food stalls featuring cuisines from across the globe, and the centre stage that hosts live concerts featuring Rock to Indian Classical. Further up the hill, is "The Boutique House Bar" that serves delightful cocktails (try the fresh strawberry Daiquiri) while DJs play late into the night.
As an alternative to the sweltering Wednesday afternoon flea market, the Saturday Night Market makes the most of the pleasant Goan evenings. With meandering lanes upon lanes of kiosks snaking through this vast open field selling everything from apples to hand-made leather belts, jewellery, carpets, apparel and much much more, the Saturday Night Market has something for everyone.
To map this sprawling market, it may be convenient to divide it into 3 main areas:
- The Lower Field of kiosks, featuring hoards of local Indian merchants selling exotic lures such as Pashminas, carpets, spices, affordable clothes, hammocks, embroidered cushions and more, as well as several international designer and kiosks selling fashionable apparel, accessories, bags, belts and other exciting grabs.
- The Central Field at the heart of the market featuring the central concert stage, beer, spirit & wine bars & food stalls with several of Goa's popular restaurants as well as individual proprietor offering gastronomic indulges from chocolates fountains, sushi, gyros and more.
- The Upper Field: rising up the small hillock towards the rear of the market, features popular kiosks of international designers, a few local merchants and the Boutique House Bar at the top right that serves fresh fruit cocktails, live DJ sets & a magic Tequila cocktail stand!
